Ca. Fish & Game supervisor Joe Powell on flooded farm land along Bacon Island Road levee near Holt, Calif., A nearly 300-foot section gave way allowing water from the Middle River to flow into the Upper Jones Tract farmland. The levee break has turned 12,000 acres of farmland near Holt into a 12,000 acre lake. Story will examine levees in CA and the danger they pose because they were mostly built sans engineering in the 19th century by simple farm folk who pushed dirt until there was a wall.
