Mindful of their heritage, a group of Chumash Indians have built a tomol -- the kind of canoe their ancestors paddled between the Channel Islands and the mainland. On Saturday, they paddled their Tomol, " Eley'wun ", Chumash for 'Swordfish'. from Channel Islands harbor to Santa Cruz Island. Members of Chumash Maritime Association took turns paddling the 20+ miles from mainland to Santa Cruz Island for only the second time in 150 years. The first trip was in 2001.
